Becoming involved in the association

One of DFCI Aquitaine's major assets is its exceptional network of over 2,500 active volunteers divided up among the 241 local associations present in the Landes de Gascogne forest.

The network of volunteers is present in 454 communes in the Landes de Gascogne region and carries out concrete and varied actions to protect the forest. Its members:

• Decide on and execute infrastructure work: this involves maintaining equipment and creating new facilities,
• Guide fire-fighting units in the field, with the fire brigade during fires or exercises; in each forest town, technical advisors are appointed within the ASAs together with the mayor of the town in question.
• Perform surveillance visits after a fire
• May be asked to raise awareness among some publics (schoolchildren, students, tourists) concerning the risk of forest fires
• Participate in the management of their ASA

In addition, in the framework of their missions, the volunteers act as privileged contacts with local authorities.

With the aim of bringing younger members into its network, and in order to maintain an energy that is essential to its mission, the DFCI needs to keep mobilizing and rotating its members; to do so, it is looking for volunteer and motivated silviculturist-owners wanting to become locally involved in prevention actions. ASA members at the start, volunteers can later take on responsibilities and move toward the position of DFCI ASA Chairman.

The success of efforts to defend against fires in the Landes de Gascogne forest is in large part due to sylviculturist-owners' widespread involvement in forest protection.
